What is ChatHindi?+
ChatHindi is a free real-time chat platform built for India — supporting Hindi, Hinglish, and 9 other Indian languages. It offers group chat rooms, private DMs, voice notes, video calls, image & GIF sharing, mini games, 20+ browser tools and more — all right in your browser with no app download required.

It was built because most mainstream chat platforms were designed for Western markets and treated India's linguistic diversity as an afterthought. ChatHindi puts language first.
Is ChatHindi completely free?+
Yes — 100% free, always. Every feature — including video calls, voice notes, group rooms, image sharing, games and tools — is available at zero cost. No "freemium" traps, no feature paywalls, no subscription tiers.

ChatHindi is supported by non-intrusive display advertising shown only on public pages. Ads are never shown inside your conversations.

Do I need to download an app?+
No download required. ChatHindi runs entirely in your browser — just visit the website and start chatting. It works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Samsung Internet on both mobile and desktop.

However, you can optionally install it as a PWA (Progressive Web App) — tap "Add to Home Screen" in your browser to get an app icon, push notifications, and faster loading. See the PWA & App section below for step-by-step instructions.
Which devices and browsers are supported?+
ChatHindi works on virtually any modern device:
  • Browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Samsung Internet, Opera
  • Mobile: Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad
  • Desktop: Windows, macOS, Linux
Camera and microphone features (video calls, voice notes) require you to grant browser permission when prompted. Older browsers (IE 11 or below) are not supported.
Which Indian languages are supported?+
You can type and chat in any language using your device's keyboard. Dedicated chat rooms exist for:

Hinglish (Hindi written in Roman script) is fully supported and very common in our General and Bollywood rooms.
How is ChatHindi different from WhatsApp or Telegram?+
ChatHindi is designed specifically for open, community-style chatting — more like a public chat room platform than a private messenger. Key differences:
  • No phone number required — fully anonymous guest access
  • Public group rooms open to anyone — discover new people
  • Browser-based — no app install, works instantly
  • Built for Indian languages with dedicated language rooms
  • Mini games, tools, shayari, cricket scores — all built in
  • Free video calls without needing a contact's phone number
WhatsApp and Telegram are great for private messaging with known contacts. ChatHindi is better for discovering and chatting with the broader Indian community.

Accounts & Registration

Sign up, login, profile settings
Do I need to register to use ChatHindi?+
No. You can join as a guest without any registration — just pick a temporary username and start chatting immediately. Guest sessions are active for 24 hours and let you explore all public chat rooms and most features.

Creating a free account gives you: a permanent username, profile photo, about me section, friends list, XP and badge system, DM history, and access to all features across sessions.
Do I need an email address or phone number to sign up?+
No email, no phone number required. Registration only needs a username and password. We designed it this way to protect your privacy and make sign-up as fast as possible — under 10 seconds.

💡 Tip

Since there's no email recovery, write your password down somewhere safe or use a password manager.

I forgot my password — what can I do?+
Since we don't collect email addresses or phone numbers, we cannot send a password reset link. If you forget your password, your options are:
  • Contact an online admin inside the app and verify your identity — they may be able to help in some cases
  • Email support@chathindi.co.in with your username and any account details you remember
  • Create a new account with a different username

⚠️ Prevention

Always save your password in a safe place. We recommend using a free password manager like Bitwarden or Google Password Manager.

How do I change my username or password?+
Go to your Profile Settings — click your avatar in the top-right corner of the chat app and select "Settings". From there you can:
  • Change your display name (shown in chat)
  • Update your password (requires entering current password)
  • Add/change your profile photo
  • Update your About Me, location, and gender
  • Choose font colour and chat bubble style
Note: your username (login name) cannot be changed after creation. Only your display name is editable.
How do I delete my account?+
To delete your account and all associated data, email support@chathindi.co.in with your username and the subject line "Account Deletion Request". We will delete your account and associated data within 7 business days.

Alternatively, reach out to an online admin directly inside the chat app — they can process deletion requests immediately.
What is the XP and badge system?+
ChatHindi has a levelling system based on your activity. You earn XP (experience points) for sending messages, participating in rooms, and being active in the community. As you earn XP, your level increases.

Badges are special achievements awarded for milestones — like sending your first message, reaching level 10, being active for 30 days, or getting recognised by admins. Your level and badges are displayed on your profile card, visible to all users.

Messaging, rooms, media sharing
How do group chat rooms work?+
Chat rooms are public spaces where any logged-in user can join and participate. Browse available rooms in the sidebar — click any room name to join it instantly. You can be in multiple rooms and switch between them anytime.

To create a room: click the + button next to Rooms in the sidebar, enter a name (letters, numbers, hyphens only), and click Create. Your room is immediately available for others to join.
How do private DMs (direct messages) work?+
Click any user's name in the online users panel or in a room message to open their profile card, then click "Send DM". A private conversation window opens — only you and that user can see it.

DMs support: text, images, GIFs, voice notes, reply threading, message reactions, and read receipts. A floating DM panel lets you stay in a room while having a private conversation simultaneously.
Can I send images and GIFs?+
Yes. You can share images and GIFs in three ways:
  • Upload: Click the 📎 attachment button and select a file from your device
  • Paste: Copy any image and press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac) directly into the chat input
  • GIF keyboard: On mobile, use your keyboard's built-in GIF picker
Images are stored securely on Cloudinary CDN. Maximum file size is 5 MB per image.
How do voice notes work?+
Click the 🎙️ microphone button in the chat input to start recording. Speak your message, then click stop to send. Recipients see a waveform player and can play the voice note directly in the chat — no download needed.

Voice notes require microphone permission in your browser. If you don't see the microphone button, check that you've granted mic access in your browser's site settings.
Can I edit or delete my messages?+
Yes. Hover over (or long-press on mobile) any message you sent to see options:
  • Edit: Available for text messages. An "edited" label appears after editing.
  • Delete for me: Hides the message only on your screen
  • Delete for everyone: Removes the message for all users in the room
Admins and moderators can delete any message in any room regardless of who sent it.
How do message reactions work?+
Hover over any message (or long-press on mobile) to see the emoji reaction picker. Click an emoji to react — your reaction appears below the message with a count. Click again to remove your reaction. Multiple people can react with the same emoji and the count increases. Reactions work in both rooms and DMs.
What games and tools are available?+
Mini Games: Snake, Memory Match, Word Chain, Reaction Test, and more — all playable in the browser without leaving ChatHindi.

  • Hindi Jokes — Santa-Banta, student, and tech chutkule

Video & Audio Calls

WebRTC browser-based calling
How do video and audio calls work?+
Calls use WebRTC — a secure, browser-to-browser technology built into all modern browsers. Your call goes directly between devices (peer-to-peer) and does not pass through our servers, ensuring both speed and privacy.

To start a call: open a DM with any user, then click the 📹 video or 📞 audio button in the top bar. The other person will receive a call notification and can accept or decline.
My camera or microphone isn't working. What should I do?+
The most common causes and fixes:
  • Permission denied: Go to your browser Settings → Site Settings → Camera/Microphone → find ChatHindi and set to "Allow", then refresh
  • Not on HTTPS: Camera/mic requires a secure connection. Make sure the URL starts with https://
  • Another app is using the camera: Close other video call apps (Zoom, Meet, WhatsApp Web) and try again
  • Browser outdated: Update to the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Safari
  • On iOS: Safari is required for WebRTC on iPhone/iPad — other browsers on iOS don't support camera access
Are calls recorded or stored by ChatHindi?+
No. Calls are peer-to-peer via WebRTC — the audio/video stream goes directly between your device and the other person's device. Our servers are not involved in the media stream at all, so we have no ability to record or store call content.

Your calls are never routed through ChatHindi's servers. Only the signalling (call setup) passes through our servers briefly — not the actual audio or video.

Can I do group video calls?+
Currently ChatHindi supports 1-on-1 video and audio calls via direct messages. Group video calls (multiple participants) are on our roadmap and planned for a future update. Check our Roadmap for the latest status on this feature.
Does video calling work on mobile?+
Yes, video calls work on mobile browsers. For best compatibility:
  • Android: Use Chrome or Samsung Internet
  • iPhone/iPad: Use Safari — WebRTC camera access is only available in Safari on iOS due to Apple's browser restrictions. Other browsers on iOS cannot access the camera for WebRTC calls.
Make sure you're on a stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection for the best call quality.

Safety & Community

Reporting, blocking, content guidelines
How do I block or ignore someone?+
Click on any user's name in a chat room or in the online users panel to open their profile card. Click "Ignore" to block them — their messages will be completely hidden from you in all rooms and DMs.

To unblock: go to your Settings → Ignored Users → find the username and click "Unignore".
How do I report a message or user?+
To report a specific message: hover over the message and click the ⚑ flag icon that appears. Select a reason (spam, harassment, inappropriate content, etc.) and optionally add details. The report is sent immediately to online admins.

To report a user directly: open their profile card and click "Report User". For urgent abuse, email abuse@chathindi.co.in with the username and a description. We review all reports within 24 hours.
Is ChatHindi safe for children?+
ChatHindi is intended for users 13 years and above. We have multiple safety layers:
  • Content moderation by active admins
  • User reporting system with rapid response
  • Ignore/block controls available to all users
  • DM controls — you can restrict who can message you
  • Zero tolerance for sexual, hateful, or harmful content
Parents should read our Parental Control Guide for recommended settings and supervision tips. We strongly recommend parents supervise younger teens using ChatHindi.
What content is not allowed on ChatHindi?+
The following are strictly prohibited and will result in an immediate ban:

I was banned — what can I do?+
If you believe your ban was a mistake, email support@chathindi.co.in with your username and an explanation. Our moderation team will review your case within 48 hours.

Note: bans issued for severe violations (sexual content, threats, hate speech) are permanent and non-reversible. Bans for minor first offences may be temporary (1–7 days) at admin discretion.
How can I control who sends me DMs?+
Go to Settings → Message Filter to choose who can send you direct messages:
  • All: Anyone can DM you (default)
  • Friends only: Only users on your friends list can DM you
  • Off: No one can send you DMs
You can also ignore specific users to block their DMs individually without restricting everyone.

Privacy & Data

What we collect and how we use it
Does ChatHindi sell my personal data?+
No. Never. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data to third parties. We only collect the minimum data needed to operate the service — your username, hashed password, messages, and activity metadata.

✓ Zero Data Sales

ChatHindi's revenue comes exclusively from display advertising on public pages. We have no financial incentive to sell your data and our Privacy Policy legally prohibits it.

How are passwords stored?+
All passwords are hashed using bcrypt with a cost factor of 10 — an industry-standard one-way hashing algorithm. This means your actual password is never stored on our servers, only its hash. Even our team cannot see or recover your password.

This also means that if our database were ever compromised, attackers would only get bcrypt hashes, not your actual passwords — and bcrypt is intentionally slow to crack.
Can admins read my private messages?+
Admins can access DM content only when investigating a formal abuse report — for example, if a user reports harassment or illegal content in a private conversation. This access is logged and used solely for moderation purposes.

Routine, non-reported private messages are not monitored. We do not have a system that proactively scans DMs for content. Read our Privacy Policy for the full scope of admin access.
What data does ChatHindi collect?+
We collect only what's necessary to run the platform:
  • Account: Username, hashed password, avatar URL, gender (optional), location (optional), about me (optional)
  • Messages: Content, timestamps, room/DM context — needed to deliver and display messages
  • Activity: Last seen time, XP, level, badge history — for the levelling system
  • Technical: IP address (for rate limiting and ban enforcement only)
We do not collect: email, phone number, device ID, precise location, or browsing history outside ChatHindi. Full details: Privacy Policy.
Does ChatHindi use cookies?+
Yes, we use a small number of cookies:
  • Session cookie: Keeps you logged in (JWT token stored in localStorage)
  • Preference cookies: Stores your theme, font size, and bubble style settings
  • Analytics cookies: Google Analytics for aggregate traffic stats (anonymised)
  • Ad cookies: Google AdSense, shown only on public pages

Roles & Moderation

Admins, moderators, room management
What are the different user roles on ChatHindi?+
ChatHindi has a four-tier role system:
  • 👑 Owner — Full platform control. Can manage all users, rooms, admins, and platform settings.
  • ⭐ Super Admin — Platform-wide moderation powers. Can ban users, manage admins, and delete content across all rooms.
  • 🛡️ Admin — Room management, user bans, content deletion, and access to the admin panel.
  • 🔨 Moderator — Assigned to specific rooms. Can delete messages and manage users within their assigned rooms.
  • Member — Standard registered user.
  • Guest — Temporary unregistered user with limited features.
How do I become a moderator or admin?+
Moderator and admin roles are assigned by existing admins — they are not applied for. Admins typically promote trusted, active, long-standing community members who have demonstrated good judgement and helpfulness.

The best way to be considered is to be consistently helpful, friendly, and active in rooms — and to report violations when you see them. You can also email support@chathindi.co.in to express your interest.
What can moderators do in their rooms?+
Room moderators (assigned by admins) can:
  • Delete any message in their assigned room
  • Kick users from their room temporarily
  • Pin important messages for all users to see
  • Receive real-time alerts for reported messages in their room
Moderators cannot ban users platform-wide, access DMs, or manage other rooms. Only admins and super admins have those capabilities.
How quickly are reports reviewed?+
Our moderation team aims to review all reports within 24 hours. Reports of severe violations (threats, sexual content, illegal material) are prioritised and typically reviewed within 1–2 hours during active hours.

When you submit a report, online admins receive a real-time notification in their admin panel. For urgent issues, email abuse@chathindi.co.in directly.

Technical Issues

Troubleshooting common problems
ChatHindi is not loading. What should I do?+
Try these steps in order:
  1. Hard refresh the page — press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
  2. Clear your browser cache and cookies for chathindi.co.in
  3. Try a different browser (e.g. if on Firefox, try Chrome)
  4. Check your internet connection — try loading another website
  5. Disable browser extensions one by one (especially ad blockers) and retry
  6. Try in an incognito/private browser window
If none of these work, contact us at support@chathindi.co.in.
Messages are not sending. What's wrong?+
This is almost always a WebSocket connection issue. Try:
  • Refresh the page — your WebSocket connection may have timed out
  • Check your internet — WebSockets need a stable connection
  • If on a corporate/school network, the firewall may be blocking WebSockets — try on mobile data
  • Check if you're still logged in — your session may have expired after 24 hours of inactivity
Notifications are not showing up. How do I fix this?+
  • Browser notifications: Go to your browser Settings → Notifications → find ChatHindi and set to "Allow"
  • In-app sounds: Open Settings inside the chat app and toggle "Notification Sound" on
  • PWA notifications: If you've installed the PWA, ensure notifications are enabled in your phone's App Settings for ChatHindi
  • iOS Safari: Push notifications for PWAs are only available on iOS 16.4+ — update your iPhone if on an older version
The chat is very slow on my phone. How can I speed it up?+
ChatHindi is optimised for low-end devices, but here are tips for the best experience on older phones:
  • Use Chrome for Android — it has the best WebSocket performance on Android
  • Close other browser tabs and background apps
  • Switch to a Wi-Fi connection if on slow mobile data
  • Go to Settings → Bubble Style → choose "Classic" (simpler rendering)
  • Install as a PWA (Add to Home Screen) — PWAs are slightly faster than browser tabs
Images I share are not loading for others. Why?+
Images are hosted on Cloudinary CDN. If images aren't loading:
  • Check your image is under the 5 MB size limit
  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP. Other formats may fail silently
  • The CDN may be temporarily slow in your region — try again in a few minutes
  • If others can see the image but you can't, clear your browser cache
I see a "Rate limit exceeded" error. What does it mean?+
ChatHindi has a rate limit to prevent spam — you can send a maximum of 20 messages per 10 seconds per user. If you hit this limit, wait a few seconds and you'll be able to send again automatically.

This limit is reset every 10 seconds and applies per account. If you're hitting it frequently during normal use, contact support as this may indicate an issue with your session.

PWA & Mobile App

Installing ChatHindi on your device
How do I install ChatHindi on my Android phone?+
On Android with Chrome:
  1. Open chathindi.co.in in Chrome
  2. Tap the ⋮ (three-dot) menu in the top-right corner
  3. Tap "Add to Home screen" or "Install app"
  4. Confirm by tapping "Install"
The ChatHindi icon will appear on your home screen. It opens in a standalone window (no browser address bar) and supports push notifications.

💡 Tip

On Samsung phones, use Samsung Internet browser and tap "Add page to" → "Home screen" for the same result.

How do I install ChatHindi on my iPhone or iPad?+
On iPhone/iPad with Safari:
  1. Open chathindi.co.in in Safari (must be Safari — not Chrome or Firefox on iOS)
  2. Tap the Share button (the box with an arrow pointing up) at the bottom of the screen
  3. Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen"
  4. Tap "Add" in the top-right corner
The ChatHindi icon will appear on your home screen. Push notifications require iOS 16.4 or later.
Does the PWA work offline?+
ChatHindi's PWA caches static assets (CSS, JavaScript, images) so the shell of the app loads offline. However, real-time chat requires an active internet connection — you cannot send or receive messages offline.

When you regain connectivity, the app reconnects automatically and loads missed messages.
Will there be a native Android or iOS app?+
A native Android app is on our roadmap. The PWA currently provides a near-native experience on both Android and iOS — same features, home screen icon, push notifications, and fast loading.

Check our Roadmap for the latest status on the native app. Until then, we strongly recommend installing the PWA for the best mobile experience.
